Where do our speech tics come from?

''En effet'', ''du coup'', ''effectivement'', ''voilà'', ''finalement'', ''heu'' or ''bonne question'', so many crutch words, language tics that slip in everywhere: in our everyday conversations, in the media, in teaching. But where do these words come from? What purpose do they serve? Can we do without them?
