From scallop to feather, there are only a few genes

A team of scientists from the University of Geneva have discovered how to permanently transform the scales that normally cover chicken legs into feathers by manipulating the expression of certain genes. Their results open up new horizons for the study of mechanisms that have enabled radical transitions of form between species in the course of evolution.
