Feathers, essential for thermoregulation, flight and communication in birds, have their origins in simpler appendages, the protoplumes, present in some dinosaurs. By studying the embryonic development of the chicken, two scientists from Geneva have demonstrated the key role of a cell signaling pathway in their formation.
