The team from Basel University and Hospital has made an astonishing discovery: it has detected 35 new species of bacteria in male and female patients. The findings, published in BMC Microbiology, are the result of a study begun in 2014 when a research team from the University and Hospital of Basel began systematically collecting blood and tissue samples from patients. Initial analysis reveals the presence of 61 germs unidentifiable by conventional methods.
