Hospitalization without consent: a delicate ethical balance

Every year in Switzerland, 2.1 people out of 1,000 are hospitalized without their consent, a rate higher than the European average. How can we reconcile respect for patients' dignity and autonomy with the need to ensure their safety and that of society?
