Why take an interest in built heritage?

Switzerland has seen a surge in population over the past two decades, and with it a construction frenzy. How can we reconcile these new needs with the preservation of our built heritage? Which buildings should be preserved, and according to what criteria? How can we reconcile energy savings with the preservation of old buildings?
