Healthcare costs continue to rise, sometimes with major impacts on already tight budgets, particularly among the middle classes. According to the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), in 2017, only 17% of Swiss still have a standard insurance model, with no limitation on choice of doctor and a low deductible. More and more people are opting for high deductibles to pay lower insurance premiums. As a result, policyholders sometimes forgo medical care or make arrangements with their doctors. This is the case of a 45-year-old single mother with two dependent children, who talks to Quentin Bohlen. Blaise Guinchard, associate professor at the Institut et Haute Ecole de la Santé La Source in Lausanne, discusses this issue with us.
