Slavery in its ancient form

Lʹesclavage in its ancient form has today disappeared from our modern societies. Yet we retain a vivid image of this mass enslavement that still resonates strongly in our imaginations. How can we explain the fact that man was able to reduce other men to the status of objects in this way?
