The Reformation as seen from Switzerland

500 years ago, Europe was on the eve of a major upheaval: the Reformation movement launched by Martin Luther. In the 16th century, a climate of anxiety about the afterlife prevailed. The indulgence trade fed on Christians' fears, but gave rise to growing anticlericalism and a context favorable to the spread of Reformation ideas.
