In the 16th century, some cantons chose to adhere to the Reformation, others not. This divide would cause many tensions, but it would become the foundation of the Swiss identity. Indeed, for fear of the ensuing outburst, the cantons opted for a form of neutrality during the Thirty Years' War. They will also learn the lesson of religious co-existence between Catholics and Reformed.
