Plant dignity: an idea worth cultivating?

Because they are able to move, defend themselves or even use their sense of smell, should plants be granted rights? Do plants possess a moral value, in the name of which they should be protected? Certainly, the idea that the plant creature has moral dignity is, more often than not, met with incomprehension, even rejection.
