Mediterranean: unity and diversity

The Mediterranean has always constituted a formidable space for exchanges and the circulation of people, goods and ideas. But can we speak of a unified whole, as the Romans imagined with their "Mare Nostrum", or must we consider it as early as antiquity as a fragmented universe? How was this Mediterranean basin perceived by the Ancients?
