There are those that separate the public from the private, such as gender boundaries that assign women to the domestic sphere and leave the privilege of public space to men, and those that organize the world into nations. But whatever their form, borders always bear witness to the social and spatial compartmentalization that, in the same movement, unites and separates individuals. Never natural, borders are thus fabrications of identity constructed in time, space and the imaginary.
