When the Bernese conquered the Pays de Vaud in 1536, they imagined that the new faith would take hold easily. But faced with the reluctance of the population, they decided to organize a dispute. Catholic clerics refused to take part, believing that only a council could legislate on matters of faith. At the end of the discussions, a vote was taken to impose the new faith on the Vaudois.
