Are university rankings worth anything?

Every year, the Shanghai, Leiden, QS or Times Higher Education rankings determine the "best universities in the world". The big Anglo-Saxon institutions inevitably occupy the top spots, but Switzerland does rather well, thanks in particular to ETHZ and EPFL. But what exactly do these rankings evaluate, and what are they worth?
