Why are we so afraid of the terrorist threat?

Since the Paris attacks, fear of the terrorist threat has been felt with greater intensity in Europe. Certainly, there is a strategy of fear, as in the videos regularly published by members of the Islamic State group the images are clearly aimed at maintaining a sense of insecurity. Why are we so afraid?
