Titanium dioxide, dangerous or not?

This additive goes by the name E171 and has come under fire for its possible toxicity, at least in animals. France will ban titanium dioxide in foodstuffs from 2020. Switzerland will make its labelling compulsory from 2021. What do we know about its effects on humans and animals?
