Telling the story of cities in song

Many popular songs are about cities. Sometimes directly, sometimes as a backdrop. Just think of Maxime Le Forestier's "San Francisco", or Barbara's "Nantes", or Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York". Why do urban landscapes feature so prominently in the musical repertoire? What are the imaginations conveyed by these songs?
