Ritual, when you guide us!

Shaking hands, celebrating the departure of a colleague over a glass of wine, reading a story to your children in the evening... these gestures and events are at first sight anodyne, compared to ceremonies like funerals or weddings. But are they rituals in the same sense? Can we do without them?
