Photo faking is not new

While the advent of digital photography and post-production computer software such as Photoshop have made photomontage easier, faking in photography is nothing new. Proof is provided by a famous photo of General Ulysses Grant during the American Civil War, dated 1864. How could images be technically faked back then? What are the limits of post-production today?
