How did Switzerland become a truly sovereign nation?

Before 1815, Switzerland was not yet truly a nation: torn by divergent interests, the cantons were disunited. After the Pact of 1815, Switzerland found itself under the tutelage of France and then Vienna, its sovereignty quite relative. So how did it become, in less than half a century, a neutral and independent state?
