Protecting heritage is one of the great difficulties in conflicts, in Syria or elsewhere. Everyone remembers the images of the giant Buddhas of Bamiyan, Afghanistan, dynamited by the Taliban and Palmyra, the ancient city destroyed by the jihadists.
