How are donations collected and distributed?

Radios, social networks, poster campaigns, and in our letterboxes, in December, appeals for donations arrive from all sides. The Swiss respond with generosity: last year they donated over 2 billion francs to charitable organizations. But how do we know that these donations end up in the right hands and achieve their intended purpose?
