First sequencing of the Y chromosome: what's the point of this thing anyway?

The Y chromosome determines male sex, and has finally been fully sequenced, completing the mapping of human chromosomes. Unlike its X partner, which is made up of 2,000 to 3,000 genes, the Y chromosome has only about 50. Two articles by American teams, published in the journal "Nature", look at the long-awaited identification of genes from this recent sequencing.
