He was a whistleblower before his time. In the early 1930s, British reporter Gareth Jones managed to circumvent Stalinist propaganda by exposing the horror of the great famines in Ukraine - and elsewhere in the Soviet Union - which claimed millions of victims. He was the first journalist to reveal this reality, clearly describing the situation on the ground.
