Egyptian mummies, wood chips and climate

In ancient Egypt, small wooden plaques were affixed to freshly embalmed mummies. Why were they used? Because once they had been wrapped in strips, the corpses could no longer be identified. The label therefore often bore the name of the deceased and a few other religious indications.
