Can you wake up after freezing?

When some people fall seriously ill, they freeze themselves, waiting to be awakened when medicine finds a cure for them. In the movies, astronauts are put to sleep in ice to pass the time faster during interstellar travel. This form of freezing is called cryonics. Does this technique really exist and what are its uses?
