Can you charge for time spent proving your good faith?

It's an unfortunately fairly common experience: following a mistake for which you're not responsible, you have to provide proof of your good faith. Copies of invoices to send, telephone exchanges, letters of explanation, registered letters cost you time, energy or even money. What are your rights? Can you charge for the time spent proving you're not responsible?
