Animal experimentation: goodbye monkeys, mice, pigs?

In 2023, 595,305 animals were used in scientific experiments in Switzerland. The vast majority were mice, but also rats, fish, rabbits, pigs and monkeys. These "animal models" are at the heart of biomedical research, to understand diseases or develop new drugs. The use of animals raises ethical issues and presents a number of scientific limitations: results obtained on animals are not always transposable to humans.
