30,000 years old, Aboriginal art was either despised or denied until the first half of the 20th century. It wasn't until the emancipation movements of the 1970s that the existence, singularity and value of this art were increasingly recognized. In a veritable boomerang effect, the destruction of their culture thus led the Aborigines to strengthen their identity and deploy unprecedented creativity, with art becoming a tool of vindication and an instrument of political struggle.
