Why is Switzerland so fond of tunnels?

From railway tunnels to the carnotzet, the Swiss have a special relationship with their underground. Tunnels are part of our national myth, just like fallout shelters or the national reduction. Where does this imagination of the underground come from? Why this passion for all that is buried?
