Why a shock to the heart can kill or save

How is it that when a person suffers a shock to the chest it can in some cases kill them and in others save them? Researchers at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the University of Berne have developed a tool to reproduce this phenomenon in the laboratory.
