When jaundice becomes an ally against malaria

Jaundice is a common symptom of malaria, caused by an accumulation of a yellow pigment in the blood: bilirubin. Scientists, whose study appears in the journal Science, reveal that this molecule, long considered a mere metabolic waste product, could actually play a protective role against the parasite responsible for the disease.
