Radioactivity: Why take iodine tablets?

Preventative use of a non-radioactive iodine tablet saturates the thyroid gland. In this case, the thyroid gland is no longer able to bind the radioactive iodine inhaled or ingested during contamination. The radioactive iodine is thus eliminated in the urine, protecting against the onset of thyroid cancer.
