From medieval times onwards, ancient Egypt has aroused an all-consuming curiosity. This interest has taken different forms over the course of history, an appeal that is both historical and archaeological, then literary, artistic and cinematic. Why does ancient Egypt occupy such a place in the Westʹs collective imagination? What is it that fascinates us so much?
