Five thousand eyes for a better view of the universe

Better observation of the expanding universe and an attempt to unravel the mysteries of dark energy are the aims of an international project to which the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is contributing. To achieve this, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), installed on the Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak, Arizona, features 5,000 fiber-optic eyes.
