China-Switzerland: between influence, mistrust and surveillance

In Beijing in 1949, Mao Tse-Tung proclaimed the People's Republic of China. Berne officially recognized this new China the following year, and was one of the first Western countries to take the step. How can we explain this when deep-seated anti-communism reigns in Switzerland?
