Biology of hyponomeutes

The cocoons seen on cultivated or wild fusain are micro-lepidopterans whose caterpillars eat the leaves. The caterpillars transform into a small butterfly called a hyponomeute. This is not a real pest, as the eaten leaves will grow back.
