Persistent cough between 3 and 8 weeks after a respiratory infection affects up to 25% of people. It is often difficult to treat and simply requires waiting. It's sometimes difficult to know whether you've been cured of a lung infection if the cough persists, as there's a notion of "subacute" that's difficult for non-specialists to understand. The diagnosis of post-infection cough is made by exclusion, by ruling out other pathologies. Once these have been ruled out, all that remains is to wait for the cough to pass.
