A universal flu vaccine

Influenza viruses change from year to year. So the vaccine, too, must continually be adapted to the strains in circulation. And sometimes one of the strains mutates during the course of the year... a mutation that seriously weakens the vaccine's effectiveness. Hence the dream of a universal vaccine. What's the current state of research?
