Since ancient times, there has been no shortage of examples of the destruction of cities ravaged by war: Athens, Troy, Dresden, Tokyo and, more recently, the Ukrainian cities of Marioupol and Severodonetsk. Most cities eventually recover, however, reminds archaeologist Sylvian Fachard.
