Is the comparison between coronavirus and Spanish flu justified?

A little over 100 years ago, the Spanish flu claimed tens of millions of lives, including some 25,000 in Switzerland. How is the current coronavirus epidemic similar? How did the authorities react at the time? What has changed in the meantime?
