The Academy of Natural Sciences' Biodiversity Report 2026 takes a hard look at the situation: despite some local progress, Switzerland's biodiversity remains insufficient and continues to decline. Some 50 scientists have examined trends since 1900, with a focus on the period 2010-2025, and found that the decline has slowed in recent years. This trend shows that protection measures can work, as in forests where dead wood encourages the return of insects, mosses and specialized species, and where emblematic species such as the bearded vulture, lynx, beaver and wolf are reappearing. But we've come a long way: with some 56,000 species recorded, one in three is now threatened.
