The new roles of school playgrounds

School playgrounds are used by pupils for around nine hours a day, from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. But beyond that, these large spaces are often empty. Many local authorities are beginning to realize the potential of these large spaces for local residents. Should schoolyards be opened up to the public? And if so, how? What role can school play in a neighborhood?
