The masculinist threat
Appearing in the seventies, the term "masculinism" groups together all kinds of movements that share the idea that men would be threatened in the face of feminist demands. Yet masculinism is in no way the opposite of feminism, which campaigns for gender equality: it advocates the domination of men over women, who are expected to remain in their "natural" place as wives and mothers. Masculinist discourse has increased significantly since the advent of the #MeToo movement, and is particularly widespread on social networks, within whatʹis known as the "manosphere". Their preferred target: a young audience, eager for advice on personal success, bodybuilding or dating. Some radicalized men require careful monitoring, including in Switzerland: their hatred of women leads them to commit violent acts. Why is masculinism enjoying a new lease of life today? What is Switzerland doing to combat its rhetoric?
