Well before Homo sapiens, our primate ancestors were already exchanging kisses. A study published in Evolution and Human Behaviour shows that this gesture, both intimate and a potential vector of disease, is thought to have appeared over 16 million years ago in great apes. Between social functions, reproductive signals and the transmission of information, kissing reveals an evolutionary history that is much older and more complex than we might imagine.
