The silence of space has been surprising SETI researchers for over 60 years. Have we missed extraterrestrial signals? Claudio Grimaldi, theoretical physicist at EPFL, tackles this question in a new study. He explains why the idea of nearby technosignatures, missed in the past, is statistically improbable. The analysis suggests that any signals would come from very far away and would have to be of long duration to be detectable.
