Fossil coelacanths could hear through their lungs

How did some ancient fish perceive sound underwater? A team from the Natural History Museum and the University of Geneva has discovered that 240-million-year-old coelacanths used their lungs to hear. Using the synchrotron in Grenoble, the researchers observed that these fossils had a lung covered with bony plates, arranged like tiles, capable of picking up vibrations from the water.
