EPFL discovery: prolonged bouncing of droplets on a vibrating surface

EPFL scientists have recreated a version of the Leidenfrost effect at room temperature using vibrations. A moving mica plate generates a thin cushion of air on which a 1.6 mm microdrop of silicone oil can bounce or remain suspended for up to five minutes, depending on frequency and amplitude.
