On August 28, 1905 in Commugny (VD), Jean Lanfray shot his pregnant wife and two daughters, aged four and one. Drunk at the time of the crime, absinthe was quickly pilloried by public opinion. So much so, in fact, that the "beverage that drives you mad" was banned shortly afterwards.
